Day 12 // Connecticut pt. 2

We got up and were ready for a fun-filled day!

Stop 1 was Gillette Castle State Park. I, for some reason, thought this was going to be a really old castle. Apparently I was forgetting that the USA is not that old actually and that old castles only exist outside of the USA. This castle was built in like the 1930s which is still cool, but not cool.

After walking in, we asked the tour guide person who actually owned the castle. She looked at us like we were crazy for not knowing and told us “Mr. Gillette.” Well yes, we kinda figured that out. So we had to ask her who exactly he was. She was not impressed with our knowledge, or lack thereof. Turns out he was an actor who played played Sherlock in a play.. I think. I guess we should embrace some wikipedia before the next tour! As Mark and I were walking up to the castle, we both asked each other if we thought this Gillette guy was the guy behind the razor. SO glad we didn’t open with that question to the tour guide!! At $6 to get inside the Castle – it was a good way to spend the afternoon! It is also a State Park so I’ll assume there are some trails and other stuff you could do here as well. We didn’t stick around to check it out tho.

After we were castled out, we headed for some lunch! It was time for some more lobster rolls according to Mark. We headed to Abbot’s Lobster in the Rough. This little restaurant has the perfect set up. Right on the water with boats and views! When you walk up, there is a big sign that says something  like: please be patient as your food is still alive when you order it and we need time to cook it. I guess that’s cool, but kinda creepy too. Anyway, we found ourselves a nice table right by the water and waited for our # to be called. Mark ordere a whole lobster which after it was served, I realized I was not okay with. I ordered crab legs even though I am well aware that crab comes from Alaska and not the Atlantic Ocean. The lunch was good, but really all they did was boil some crab legs & a lobster. We also has lobster bisque and some deviled eggs which were average – but the view outranks it all!

Day 11 // Connecticut

A little late on this post, but better late than never right.

While we were at dinner the night before, the restaurant owner got to talking to us and told us we should definitely look into taking a ferry across from Long Island to Connecticut. We looked into it and found a ferry that left about 30 mins from where we were staying and would drop us off in a good location in Connecticut for what we wanted to do there. The cost (approx $160) for us to take our RV on the ferry was about equal to what we would have to pay in tolls and the the emotional abuse we were going to have to take while driving through Manhattan again. SIGN US UP.  In true Mark and Rachel form, we arrived to Port Jefferson (departing city) at 11:57 when the ferry was supposed to depart at 12:00 and we literally could not figure out how to get in the parking lot of the ferry! We drove up and down the (narrow) road at least 4 times trying to figure out what were doing wrong. To add stress to it, as we were driving up and down the main road we were watching the ferry pull away. I guess there is always the next one, right?! We finally figure out what were doing wrong: it was one of those entrances where you could only enter from one direction which was obviously not the direction we came in from. I’d like to think we are smarter than a road & ferry entrance, but I guess not.

We made it over to Connecticut easily and headed out to our new spot: Riverdale Farm Campsite

Stan parked at Riverdale Farm Campsite

We headed out as soon as we got there and went to drive around Yale and grab some dinner. Mark found some place that has been around for like 90 years and is supposed to have the best pizza ever. Apparently the gluten free thing is going to be a lot harder on the road than I thought. We didn’t really know where we were supposed to go to “see” Yale and were disappointed at first because what were seeing was not what we were picturing. We drove around a little more and found the super cool old buildings we were looking for!

so pretty

So pretty!

We headed over Pepe’s next and were amused when we turned the corner and there wer no less that 25 people standing outside the restaurant waiting to get in. It was like 7 pm on a Tuesday.. reallllly?! This better be some great pizza. It didn’t take as long to get seated as one would have imagined as part of the line was like a group of 13. Once we got in and looked at the menu I realized what type of place we were at. We have one similar to us in Akron that I.. loathe. I know that is a strong word but I’ll use it anyway. I’m talking about Luigis. Same story, old restaurant that people love and flock to. There is always a line outside of Luigis before it opens and various other times but I personally would rather eat dirt than Luigis. Luigis is only good at around 3 am after a night of heavy drinking. #hater. Anyway, back to Pepe’s. The only serve pizza and 2 salads. That’s it. I ordered a salad and a create your own chicken + veggie pizza. Mark ordered a 1/2 original tomato pizza and 1/2 clam pizza which is confusing because he doesn’t like clams. What a person (Mark) will do because of a good yelp review is amazing. The pizza was decent, but I certainly don’t think it warrants being listed in 1000 Places to See Before You Die: USA & Canada. As we were leaving, the line outside was even longer! Crazyy!!

Day 8, 9 & 10 // Long Island, The Hamptons

Combining a few days for this post!

Day 8 // Driving Day. We left New Jersey for our drive out to Long Island and ultimately The Hamptons. We had a longerish drive, around 5 hrs in total. When we took off, we didn’t exactly know where our next campground was going to be as all the places we had called were sold out or only took walk up reservations. But, that is half the fun of it all – right?!

View of NYC coming up to it!

View of NYC coming up to it!

Anyway, we had to drive through Manhattan to get here which was ZERO fun. ZERO. First of all, we had upwards of $115 in tolls for the world’s shittiest roads. I legitimately felt like I was going to fly out of the RV as we hit pot hole, after pot hole, after pot hole. I had to go lay down in the bed because I was getting a headache from it all.

Manhattan.. in an RV.

Manhattan.. in an RV.

We called ahead to Wildwood State Park which told us they had a few spots left but they were all walk up/no reservations. As we were about an hour or so out, we figured we risk it and show up and see what happened. After the hellish drive to get there, we had our fingers crossed that the spots would still be available when we arrived because driving around and trying to find another spots seemed like a daunting task. As we pulled in, there was a big sign that said “no availability.” How can that be? We just called an hour ago?! We pulled in anyway hoping that they just didn’t take the sign down from the holiday before or something. Luckily, they still had a spot (and it seemed like a few more as we were driving through) for us and we found our new home from the next few nights! @ $27ish/night, this has certainly been our “prettiest” spot we’ve been too! It was late and we were both hungry so we grabbed some dinner at a spot close by and checked out the beach. After dinner we did some grocery shopping because there was a Whole Foods close by and we cannot pass up a Whole Foods! How 2 adults can spend $200 on food for an RV to store in a mini fridge and a cabinet the size of a tic tac is absurd, but such is our life.

Our new spot at Wildwood State Park!

Day 9 // The Hamptons. I had my eyes peeled for some celebs all day but didn’t see anyone! On the drive back to our RV, I did see via Kim Kardashian’s Instagram (yes I follow her, judge me) that she had just left the Hamptons and was back in NYC. Darnit, I missed my chance!!!! We grabbed some brunch at 75 Main in Southampton where Mark finally got his first taste of some good ol’ New England Lobster Roll (and then subsequently more lobster rolls throughout the day). I think maybe lobster rolls are growing on me as well and I nibbled on some of Mark’s and liked it! We walked around the little downtown area and then jumped back in the car for more!

We then headed to Montauk Point for a little lighthouse action! @ $9/person to walk up the lighthouse, it was a pleasant way to spend the afternoon!

Time for another lobster roll! This time at a cute little spot on the side of the road called “Lunch, the lobster roll.” Really, no beating around the bush here. Super casual spot that gave you a free beer with a Yelp check-in. Beats just about any other Yelp check-in, ever.

IMG_4484

Now that our bellies were sufficiently full we headed to Easthampton and walked around this area for a little bit and then we tried (rather unsuccessfully as cell phone coverage seems to be awful there) to try to find where all the BIG houses were that we could go creep on. As it is a small area, we figured we would just guess and started driving around. We drove around and saw some big houses and found some beaches we could walk on and see the houses from that angle!

That about wrapped up our day. Drove home and cooked a nice dinner at the campground and went to bed.

Day 10 // Relax & Work day

Mark worked all day today and I walked my happy-self to the beach at the campground and read all day. It was marvelous. We found a great, and I mean great place for dinner tonight at Michael Anthony’s Food Bar. If you’re ever in the Wading River area make sure you check it out!!

Day 7 // Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July everyone! What a soggy day we are having here in New Jersey! Our RV park in a little bit flooded but nothing too bad. The rain is supposed to let up here soon (around 4) and then the wind is supposed to hit. Mark got a lot of work done today and I did some laundry. How we had so much laundry after only a week is a little bit confusing to me, but oh well. It seemed everyone else had the same idea about laundry day. I felt like I was back in college playing the “do I wait a few more minutes to see if the person comes back for their clothes or do I take them out of the washer myself.” Luckily, the person came back mid thought and took care of their clothes and washers were available! I realize this is not earth-shattering reading material, but hey.

mild flood...

Hopefully the weather clears up and we can head out to the Jersey Shore, MTV style later (Seaside Heights) today!! And then hopefully we can see some fireworks later too!

update:

It did clear up, kinda. It stopped raining but it got very windy. Thanks Arthur. We did make it to Seaside Heights and we got to see the Jersey Shore House! It looked just like the TV show but somehow still wasn’t what I was expecting. Either way, it was fun! However, fireworks are cancelled all around this area so we are back in the RV binge watching Breaking Bad for the night.

Day 5 // Philadelphia pt. 2

Philly pt. 2!!

We got up earlyish and decided to hit downtown Philly to take in some culture and history! We headed to the US Mint first. It took us forever to find parking. Like forever. We should have predicted it because it is a holiday weekend after all but it still seemed like a lot of effort for parking. Once we finally a lot that was open, we decided we weren’t moving the car until it was time to leave and that we were going to walk around and see all of Philly that we wanted to make the parking worth it. Dramatic, I know.

I’m pretty sure they must not let you take pics inside the Mint because neither Mark or I have pics from inside. It was a pretty cool self guided tour that took us about 25 minutes to do. In theory, the mint is always making coins and anytime you would visit it, you could see it in action. You basically walk around a catwalk above the production floor and look down on everything. It seemed like a slow day but it did seem like things were happening when we were there. There were interactive displays and computers that told you everything you were seeing below you and we learned a decent amount.

Since we were super close to the Liberty Bell, we figured we would go check out what kind of line we were dealing with wait it out. As we were talking through the area where we thought the Liberty Bell was, there were hundreds, if not thousands of people standing in a line. Oh boy. Our hearts sank a little bit because there were just so many people. I asked one of the people who looked like security person where the line for the Liberty Bell started. She looked at me like I had 3 heads and said she didn’t know. Well, okay.. isn’t that while you are standing here? I asked the next security person and he chuckled and said it was the next park area/building over and that all of these people were waiting in line for Hoagie Day. What is Hoagie Day you ask? A day where they give out free hoagies. Now I looked at the weather app and the real fee was 99 degrees outside with a humidity of like 100%. There is no way you could pay me to stand in that line for a free hoagie. Probably couldn’t even pay me to stand in that line for free anything.

All the people

All the people. Oh vey.

Once we found the real life for the Liberty Bell it was much more manageable.

It was so stinkin’, freakin’ hot and humid that we both were lightweight dying. We didn’t want to leave the AC of the Liberty Bell building, but we did. And we realized we were starving so we headed over to Reading Terminal Market. We love markets like this so much. So many fun vendors, fresh produce and friendly people! The perfect lunch & it had AC! We ate cheesecake #3 & #4.

We needed some more AC so we went back to our car and drove over the Philly Art Museum. Now I’m not one that likes art too much but it is fun to walk around and look at the art for a little bit.

The last week of driving, sightseeing and long days must have caught up to us because by the time we got back to our RV around 7, we were done for the night. I’m talking, we lounged around and are going to bed super early!

Day 4 // Philadelphia

I have been waiting for this day since we added Philly to our list of stops a few weeks ago. Philly Cheesesteaks.. get in my belly!!!!! Now, I try to eat gluten-free but these few days don’t count. Like not even a little bit. We arrived around 7 pm to the city and I’ve already eaten (half of each) 2 cheesesteaks. So. Freaking. Good.

soooooooo goooooood

soooooooo goooooood

Now, I need suggestions for your favorite cheesesteak place because I’m judging I have about 4 meals tomorrow that I plan on eating nothing but cheesesteaks for.

But let’s back up a few hours. We were set to leave Hershey around 10:30 am but we slept in and took our time showering and packing up. And then we couldn’t get the stupid robo-brake to work and spent a solid 45 mins trying to get it to work. We did, but such a pain. So it had to be around 1 by the time we left. We headed straight for The King of Prussia Mall, which is the largest Mall in the U.S.A. Surprisingly, this was Mark’s idea as I just assumed the biggest mall was the Mall of America and trust me, I have and continue to make it clear that we are going when we are out there. Anyway, we spent a few hours walking around and I finally pulled the trigger on a silver watch! I forgot to take a pic of it but I will tomorrow. The watch was certainly the highlight of the mall trip!

Philly.

Philly.

Now back to Philly. As I mentioned, we arrived around 7 and had to sweetly ask our new neighbor if he could help us with our water heater because it was spraying/leaking water and we couldn’t figure out 1. why or 2. how to stop it. Luckily he was able to help (something about a faulty cap but luckily we had a spare just sitting in the compartment? Unclear, Mark’s territory = anything broken)

We hit the road and headed out to get some cheesesteak! Afterwards, we went downtown and parked and walked around! Here are some pics from our night:

Day 3 // Hershey, PA & surrounding area

Since we knocked out the Hershey stuff yesterday, we drove around the surrounding area today and did some exploring. Up first was a house that is shaped like a shoe! Now if you know me, you know I love shoes & if you don’t know me, just believe with all your heart that I love shoes. I’m probably the only person who packed at least 10+ pairs of heels for an RV road trip. And that is just the heels, you probably don’t want to know how many shoes in total I brought.

The Shoe House!

We then stopped by an antique mall and walked around looking at all the treasures throughout. We were starrrving by this point and did a quick yelp search for a lunch spot and found a great cafe close by: Gaia, fresh food cafe. Highly recommend! Mark loves eating as healthy as possible (me too at times, but I’m certainly not ever going to pass up junk food) and this place was perfect. Raw/Vegan/Vegetarian/Gluten Free options and delicious fresh juices and smoothies. Plus they have a cute outside patio which no matter how hot & humid summers can be around here, I LOVE sitting outside to eat!

Gaia Fresh Food Cafe! Yum!

Up next was a tour of Turkey Hill Ice Cream plant. Also known as the “Turkey Hill Experience.” We opted out of waiting over 1.5 hours for the create your own ice cream part and settled for the self guided (hallelujah) tour. But don’t worry, the tour came with all you can eat free samples. HEAVEN.

As per a suggestion from a friend, we stopped by the Hershey Hotel & Gardens and walked around. What a sight and certainly worth the $11 dollars/person admission sign I rolled my eyes when we walked up. It is a huge garden with several different areas which is located up on a hill overlooking the Hershey theme parks. We ventured into the butterfly house. we have passed on several butterfly houses before on other travels, but it didn’t take long before we decided we regret all those times. It was so cool! It was fun seeing all the butterflies and having them land on you as well. We will definitely be visiting more butterfly houses in the future.

Tomorrow we move on to the greater Philadelphia area for a few days. Wish us luck because we didn’t plan ahead (I know you’re shocked) and we don’t have a campground picked for the holiday weekend coming up. EEEEEEKKKK. Walmart it just might be!

Day 2 // Driving Day, Giant Quarter & Hershey Park

Hi 🙂

Today we drove from our first spot to Hershey, PA. We stopped (or tried to stop) a few places along the way.  We first tried to find gravity hill. You’re supposed to be able to put your car in neutral and it will roll up hill because the gravity is weird here. I think it is all just an optical illusion but still cool. Only we didn’t do our research before and weren’t looking for the “GH start” that was supposedly spray painted on the road and missed it. We only say “GH end” and by that time, we were so over winding roads and just gave up.

one lane, winding roads = not fun

one lane, winding roads = not fun

We were in the middle of nowhere and had no cell service at this point and thought we were on our way to our next “drive by” destination on our way to Hershey, PA. Only once we got back into cell service, we realized we had passed our destination. 0/2.  So, great start to day 2. It turned around and we found the giant quarter along the road and took some pics!

We made it to our new campground Hershey Camping Resort a little before dinner! We stopped at Harvest Restaurant in the Hershey hotel. It claims to serve a lot of fresh, organic and local ingredients, which is right up our alley! The restaurant and concept I would give a 5 star but the actual food left a little to be desired. We thought we would just head back to the campground for the night but realized the Hershey’s Chocolate World was still open!! Score, what a lovely dessert that would be!

Day 1 // Falling Water & Laurel Caverns

I can’t figure out how I want to title my posts yet, so just roll with it while I probably change it 100 times.

Yesterday marked our first full day of #RVhoneymoon!!!! Fortunately for us we had no hiccups today!!! Unfortunate for you because you’ll have to find your amusement elsewhere today.

We slept like little babies in our new home and woke up refreshed and ready to explore Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water and then tour Laurel Caverns. We took our little shower caddies and walked to the campground showers to freshen up. I felt like I was back in college (can I get an OU, oh yeah) with my shower flip flops on. Mark was less impressed and looked at me crazy when I told him that he should probably wear his flip flops too. Oh well.

update: I’m blogging from the passenger seat and Mark just completely ignored a detour sign and we had to do a 360 turn to get back where we needed to be. In the process of doing this turn, my car that is being towed most certainly ran into the back of the RV. I think I need to formally apologize to my car for the abuse it has experienced over the last 2 days. Sorry girl. See, you knew if you just stuck around you would eventually get your amusement for the day.

Blogging away! My posture is truly horrific. I'll work on that!

Blogging away! My posture is truly horrific. I’ll work on that!

Back to our first day, after we freshened up we hit the road to go to Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Falling Water” house. Our tour was scheduled for noon and we promptly arrived at 11:58 because we are the worst. Now group tours are not my cup of tea. I’ve never been on a tour where there wasn’t someone asking too many annoying questions or an awkward tour guide. This tour was no different. Still, it was a super pretty house and scenery and good info! We grabbed a quick lunch at the café and we were on our way to Laurel Caverns!

We had both been smart enough to grab some tennis shoes, however neither of us were smart enough to bring a backpack to carry our belongings or warm enough clothes. I had a light hoodie, but I’m always cold, so it was more or less worthless. I think I might have been in some big caves back when we took a family reunion trip to West Virginia but I was like 12 so I can’t be sure. These were pretty awesome caves!! They had wired lights in them so it was easy to see around everything. When we arrived we were just handed a ticket for the “family tour.” There was a sign for “upper cave tour” and “lower cave tour” which of course we asked about. The lady said they were 3 hour tours in the complete darkness that left in the early morning. You had to wear specific clothing and carry x number of flashlights and wear a hard hat. Mark was bummed we were not on one of those tours and I was thanking my lucky stars we weren’t. Then we saw a bunch of EMTs and overheard that someone on one of the long tours, fell & broke his leg and was stuck and needed rescuing. We both looked at each other and said “family walking tour it is!” Hopefully the guy was okay. He was still not rescued by the time our hour tour was over. But again, this was a group tour so by the time it was over, I had reached my quota for group tours.

The Start to A Wonderful #RVhoneymoon

Well, the guys over at Avalon RV Center pulled through and got our RV all fixed up! I told them I would write something nice about them since they helped us out, so here it is guys. Hope you’re reading this!

We got the RV back on Thursday around 4 and drove him home! We unhitched my car and ran a few last-minute errands. How we still had errands to run as we were supposed to leave dayyys ago is beyond me. We got home from our errands and went to load some stuff into the RV and the electronic step didn’t work. Weird. As I’ve mentioned, we are not very RV savvy yet (and I doubt ever) so we just assumed (there’s that word again) we were doing something wrong and went and got ice cream at Strickland’s instead of messing with it. We thought maybe it would fix itself by the time we returned. No such luck. I had the bright idea maybe we should just turn the RV on and that would fix it. Well, it didn’t fix it but THE RV WOULD NOT TURN ON. It wouldn’t even try to turn over. REALY!?! Are there hidden cameras somewhere, because this cannot be normal.

Well, it is now 8 pm and our only choice is to call GoodSam as we are members. The guy walks us through a few things and still nothing. He says the only guy he could find to come help us would be around 9 am tomorrow. “Better than sometime next week,” is all we can say. We get the rest of the RV loaded up because “we are leaving tomorrow even if we have to push the RV in neutral down the street to the Walmart.”

The mechanic arrives at 9 am ish, to our pleasant surprise, and informs us our battery is 110% dead and we need a new one. Fine. He goes and gets a new battery and puts it in and Stan (thanks mom for the great RV name) starts right up!!! YAY!!! I wanted to kiss the mechanic I was so happy! We loaded up the last few things and hit the road around noon! #RVhoneymoon has officially started!!!

Mark, officially in the captain's chair!

Mark, officially in the captain’s chair!

We head towards PA as our plan is to head east to the coast and then up it into New England and possibly Canada! Everything is great, we are riding smoothly and enjoying the drive and views and company. Our first stop along #RVhoneymoon is a place Mark found called “Joe’s Bar.” It doubles as a taxidermy museum. In fact, there were more animals than bar. Also, you can smoke in bars in PA apparently so we got out of there STAT after viewing the museum.

Joe's Bar everyone!

Joe’s Bar everyone!

Now for the fun stuff. The keys have to be in the ignition for my car to be towable. As we were planning on walking around the little downtown and go to “Joe’s Bar,” we didn’t think it wise to leave the doors unlocked and car keys in the ignition whether it was hooked up or not. When we got back, we went through the series again to hook up the car to be towable and put the robo-brake in. We start on our merry way and get about .1 miles and people start honking at us. WHY!?! I know we are a big RV driving through your little town, we’re sorry we are blocking intersections. But then we see it, smoke billowing out from my car’s tires. (slightly dramatic, not billowing so much as barely smoking- poetic license over here). Anyway, we stop and realize the robo-brake is just in the down position, so we’ve been basically dragging my car with the brakes initiated. Oh vey.

It has been about 4 hours since we left home for anyone keeping track.

Considering we were blocking about 85% of the town’s downtown intersection, we decided our best plan is to just unhook the whole thing, test the car to make sure we didn’t cause permanent damage and I would just follow Mark to the campground about 30 mins away and we would readdress robo-brake tomorrow. So for about 1/5 of our #RVhoneymoon, Mark and I weren’t even in the same vehicle. *golf clap*

I'm driving my car and following Mark. The drive to Brenner's Meadow Run was reallyyy beautiful and my iphone pic taken while driving doesn't really do it justice.

The rest of the evening went smoothly. We put some food in our bellies and went to Walmart because, you guessed it, we realized we forgot stuff and needed stuff we hadn’t even thought of. It is the start of our first full day of #RVhoneymoon and we’re headed to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water and Laurel Canyons! We will address robo-brake tomorrow when we leave. Stay tuned for pics and I’m sure more stories of trial and error (which I know is the real reason most of you read this 🙂 )

p.s. I just spellchecked this, and I had spelled “brake” – “break” the entire post.
